What is an electrician apprenticeship?

An electrician apprenticeship blends work experience and study to enable you to qualify and commence your career as an electrician. As an electrical apprentice, you will work and learn on the job under the supervision of experienced electricians whilst studying for level 2 intermediate and level 3 advanced qualifications. There is also the possibility to pursue more advanced study and gain experience for more specialist roles within the industry.

Consider if you meet the requirements

  • You must be over 16 years of age and not be in full-time education.
  • You are required to be a UK resident and for a minimum of three years.
  • To start you need to establish if you meet all the entry requirements to be able to apply. This will be dependent on the level you wish to commence at. As an example, to commence level 3 you are generally required to have at least five GCSEs to include English and Maths. Level 2 qualifications have slightly lower requirements and commonly require at least two GCSEs. It is vital that you check with potential employers and providers as some may have higher requirements. If you don’t have the required number of GCSE’s you can undertake a functional skills test to determine your suitability.

Seeking an employer

Employers may advertise apprenticeship vacancies online in the same way they would for a full-time position. You can also search for training providers who work alongside employers to train apprentices. They will be able to advise on suitable employers for you to contact and consider.

Update your CV

An up-to-date and well-written CV is often required to send with your application. It is also important to familiarise yourself with what an electrical apprentice position involves.

Complete all of the required courses

An electrician apprenticeship consists of both on-the-job learning and attending a college to undertake multiple levels of study. As an apprentice, you can expect to earn an income throughout the duration. The apprenticeship usually covers all fees related to study.

How long does it take to complete an electrical apprenticeship?

Typically, it takes between three and four years to complete. At least 20% of your time will be spent studying with the remainder of your time learning knowledge and skills whilst on the job. If you decide to study independently through further education colleges, you can get the equivalent qualifications in two or three years. Although faster, the downside of the non-apprenticeship route is the absence of work while you study and the necessity of paying for the courses.
